The cities of Fairfield and Suisun City collect sewer service and capacity charges for the District, as part of their municipal utility bill. The Fairfield-Suisun Sewer District’s sewer service and capacity charges consistently have remained among the lowest in the region. And we’re striving to keep it that way.
Homeowners are charged a flat monthly sewer service charge per dwelling unit, which applies to single-family homes; to individual units in multi-family structures such as duplexes, condominium units and apartment buildings; and to individual units in mobile home parks. Our monthly sewer service charges cover our expenses for collection, conveyance and treatment of the wastewater that homes and businesses in our service area generate. Monthly service fees also fund necessary repairs or replacement of damaged sewer lines as well as ongoing maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant.
The monthly sewer service charges for commercial customers are based upon the volume of wastewater that they discharge during each billing period. We use a tiered structure, with lower rates for the “regular strength” category of users that produce effluent containing modest percentages of contaminants, and proportionately greater rates for “special strength” users that place greater demands upon our treatment system. For example, offices, schools, nursing homes, motels, hotels and bars without dining facilities pay less per hundred cubic feet of discharged water than do commercial laundries, restaurants, bakeries and commercial food processing operations.
Sewer capacity charges are fees assessed for new residential, commercial and industrial developments, to help offset the cost of furnishing additional conveyance and treatment capacity. The building and planning departments of the cities collect most sewer capacity charges for the District.
We do review and, if necessary, adjust sewer service and capacity charges periodically to ensure the availability of sufficient revenues to maintain the operation of the system.
