Did you know that most water pollution in our bays comes from cars?  Exhaust particles drift onto roadways, oil and other fluids drip onto streets, and car parts like brakes leave toxic residue on the roads.  Rainwater washes these pollutants off our driveways and roads into a runoff system that drains directly into our creeks and bays.  Keep you car tuned, check seals, and repair leaks immediately.  Your choices can help Fairfield-Suisun Sewer District reduce pollution in our bays and waterways.

Here are more tips:

  1. Drive less! Walk or ride a bike whenever you can. Consolidate trips. Ride the bus or train. Car pool with a friend.
  2. Watch for leaks from your car and repair them promptly.
  3. Recycle used oil and oil filters.
  4. Exchange your old car battery where you buy a new one or take it to a recycling center or household hazardous waste collection site/event.
  5. If you see someone pouring used auto fluids into the street, gutter, or storm drain, report it to your local police department, immediately.  Pouring any substance into a storm drain is against the law!
  6. When you see a smoking auto or truck on the road make a note of license number, date, and location and call 1-800-EXHAUST (800-394-2878) to report it.
  7. When your auto air conditioner requires service, find out if it can be retrofitted to accept a non-ozone depleting refrigerant.
  8. In the Solano County area, select your city on the Solano County Recycle Guide at www.recycle-guide.com for information on recycling used oil and oil filters.
