Fats, oils, and grease (also called FOG) should not be washed down the kitchen drain. FOG clogs drains, and can cause sewer drain backups in your home and sewage overflows in the community. You can recycle your used cooking oil at your local recycling center. For other kitchen fats and grease, collect it in a sealed container which can be disposed of in the garbage. Some recycling centers collect used kitchen grease as well. If your recycler collects both cooking oil and kitchen grease, check with them on how they would like it contained.
Don’t forget to scrape and discard drippings and scraps from plates and pans before you wash them. This keeps high fat foods like butter, mayonnaise, meat juices, and salad dressing from going down the drain.
In the Solano County area, select your city on the Solano County Recycle Guide at www.recycle-guide.com for locations where you can recycle cooking oils and kitchen grease.
