Help the environment by properly disposing of products containing mercury and other metals instead of just tossing them in the trash! Rechargeable batteries may be a green choice that helps the environment, but like regular batteries, they should be recycled when they finally die. Fluorescent bulbs are preferred for their energy savings, but because they contain mercury, they require special handling when you are ready to dispose of them. When you upgrade to electronic thermostats and thermometers, check to see if your old ones contain mercury. A mercury thermometer has shiny silver liquid in its bulb, and a mercury thermostat contains that same shiny silver liquid in a small ampoule. Recycle used electronic gadgets so that useful metals can be reclaimed and toxic metals removed. If you are not sure that a product you are disposing of may contain mercury or other toxic metals, play it safe by taking it to your recycler or household hazardous waste collector just in to be sure.
